"Taking part in the Commonwealth Youth Games has been the best sporting experience of my life so far.
To lead the Isle of Man team out at the opening ceremony, carrying the Manx Flag as Team Captain made me feel incredibly proud. To represent the Island in such an amazing international event was something I could never have imagined when I first started swimming. It was great to share the experience with my friends from swimming and to get to know the other members of the team and coaches from the other sports. Competing in the Bahamas was an added bonus! The outdoor pool was excellent & the experience of competing against such a high standard of international competition was fantastic.
The highlights in the pool for me were achieving another Gold Coast Long course minimum standard, personal best times, including improving on my Island Records and being first reserve for 2 finals, including a swim-off against a very good Australian swimmer. Our mixed relay team were also very pleased to finish in 7th place in the freestyle relay.
The benefits of competing at Commonwealth Youth Games are the standard of competition, knowing that I was swimming against future world-class athletes definitely improved my performance. It was also great to have Lee coaching and Rosemary as Team Manager. They were both so supportive providing the discipline and preparation we needed to perform at our best.
The experience of being part of the team will help me with future competitions and has inspired me to keep training hard to go on and achieve more."
