Target Archery is divided into two main classes by bow type: Recurve, and Compound. Recurve is the more conventional looking bow with a string from limb tip to limb tip. Compound bows are generally shorter and have a pulley type system at each end of the limb and what appear to be three strings. Both types of bow can have the addition of sights and stabilizer systems. In addition the Compound shooter can use a mechanical release aid to loose the string rather than shooting off the fingers as a Recurve archer must.
Arrows these days are mainly carbon fibre. Target Archery is a very old sport having its origins in the practice for wars where the Long Bow was a formidable weapon. In modern times the sport has become an equipment and technique sport. Archers no longer have to have huge muscle mass as modern equipment is so efficient.
As archery has not been included in the Commonwealth Games for some time we have no IOM history at the Games, however IOM archers have had a lot of success at Island Games level, and are looking forward to the challenge of attaining Commonwealth Games qualifying standards.
