Our Athletes - Badminton

Isle of Man Badminton Association

On the Island badminton is thriving with over 400 registered senior players, 300 junior players and numerous social players.  Badminton was first represented at the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh and since then the Isle of Man has competed at a further 5 games which included competing in the team event at Edmonton for the first time as well as the individual competitions.

Competitions throughout the season comprise of 6 Mixed Leagues, 6 Men’s Leagues, 4 Women’s Leagues, together with the A.P.Archibald Memorial competition leagues played on Commonwealth Games Team format plus a Mixed Knock-Out competition for the Green Final Trophy.  5 senior tournaments are played during the season at different levels together with 5 junior age group tournaments from primary to Under 19 championships.  A junior singles league is also held on Saturday evenings.  The mixed leagues, men’s leagues, A.P.Archibald Memorial competition, singles league and all tournaments are played at the National Sports Centre.

The senior Island team competes off Island in the Regional Inter County Championship and our players regularly play in Badminton England tournaments at junior and senior level.

Badminton has been represented at the NatWest Island Games since 1985 – the only exception being 2007 when our sport was not included.  The sport is now developing rapidly and is part of the Isle of Man Community Key Sports Programme which includes having a part-time Development Officer and a 5 year development plan for all areas of the sport.  Some of the Key elements of this 5 year plan are the Manx Youth Games, Senior and Junior Competitions (as above), Coaching, Officials, Volunteers and teams to represent the Isle of Man at all levels up to and including the Commonwealth Games.
