Manx Rugby Football Union – Isle of Man Rugby

Rugby on the Isle of Man is administered by the Manx RFU although all clubs are members of the Rugby Football Union (England). There are six clubs on the island with senior, youth and junior sections. One club has a women’s team. There are over 800 competitors actively involved in the sport and there is a substantial social participation.

Isle of Man rugby has not yet competed at Commonwealth Games level and will make its debut at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2011 on the Isle of Man.

Three of the island’s club compete in the RFU National Leagues in England playing matches home and away against clubs on the island and in the North West of England. The remaining clubs and second XV’s play in the local Manx Shield Competition which is a weekly local league currently containing eight sides. All clubs compete for the Manx Knockout Cup which is held on an annual basis.

The women’s team has been accepted into the WRFU National Leagues in England and will begin playing matches home and away against clubs in the North of England in September 2008.

The Youth and Junior fixtures are held on the island in age group tournaments from Under 7 to Under 17.

All clubs host touring fixtures at senior, youth and junior levels and travel to tournaments in the UK and Ireland.

The Isle of Man is host to one of the RFU’s beach rugby tournaments every August.

Rugby on the island is developing rapidly after having no youth and junior rugby at clubs until 10 years ago. It is classified as a Key Sport and is part of the Isle of Man Community Key Sports Programme which includes having a full-time Development Officer and a 5 year development plan for all areas of the sport. The Manx RFU is actively involved in developing the sport within clubs and Primary schools through provision of coaches and club links. It also provides, with support from the RFU, training courses and seminars on the island for coaching development, referee development, pitch and facility development as well as welfare programmes.
