Team Isle of Man experienced varied success at the Commonwealth Youth Games on Day 3. In the morning swimming session, all three swimmers competed. First in action was Team Captain Olivia Rawlinson (15) and Heather Millar (14) in the 200m freestyle. Both swam well in their heat, recording personal best times by around one second. However, their best performances were not enough to qualify them for the final, Millar placing 5th in her heat (11th overall) and Rawlinson 3rd (9th overall). Frustratingly, Rawlinson was only 0.5 secs away from qualification with only the fastest eight going through.
Rawlinson ranked the same in the 100m backstroke, her time of 1min 08.50 the 9th best performance in qualifying. However, with the withdrawal of one finalist, Rawlinson was able to compete in the evening final. Olivia did not waste the opportunity given to her, the finalist recording a new personal best of 1min 07.98, 8th overall.
Elsewhere in the swimming competition, Heather Millar produced a strong performance in the 50m butterfly, only 3.71 secs behind the leader who broke the Games Record. Grant Halsall also contested the same event in the men's competition resulting in only 2.63 secs behind the leader. Halsall failed to qualify in his stronger event the 100m backstroke, placing 5th in his heat (15th overall), a poor start costing the Plymouth College swimmer an attacking position in the race.
Such results, however, must be viewed in context; all three swimmers faced competitors who were 3-4 years older, and the standard at this Games is particularly high, with several Games Records being set not only in the finals but also the qualifying heats.
Danielle Letch contested the 10m pistol shooting competition. Using the brand-new 80 booth pistol shooting range, Danielle (18) did not make the pistol final. Letch, who had consistently beaten the CYG Standard throughout the year struggled in qualifying, scoring 340 out of 400 to place 10th.
