Sharp shooter Shacklock on target whilst Rawlinson makes second final.
Thursday's events provided the Island's best results so far during the 2008 Pune Games. Olympic skeet shooter Daniel Shacklock was in brilliant form in the shooting competition. In 3 rounds of 25 clay targets, Shacklock (14) shot rounds of 22, 22 and 23, missing only 8 targets in the day. However, Daniel found himself amongst tough competition, with two other shooters sharing the same score - 67 - and one Cypriot shooter leading the charge with a score of 71. Shacklock will contest two more rounds today (Friday) before the final third round decider.
In athletics, middle-distance athletes Tom Richmond (17) and Gemma Astin (16) fought the heat in their events, 800m and 3,000m respectively. Richmond was in the first and toughest heat. Beginning with a strong first lap split of 56, the leading pack broke away leaving the Manx Harrier adrift in 6th place. In the evening session, Gemma Astin suffered from a fast start and the hot conditions. Despite attempts to back off from the Kenyan-led pace, Astin dropped back in a fragmented field to place 13th out of 18 finalists.
Team Captain Olivia Rawlinson, however, continued her good form from Wednesday in the pool. Rawlinson broke the one-minute barrier for the first time in the 100m freestyle heats, team mate Heather Millar likewise recording a lifetime best of 1min 00.94. Both swimmers, however, did not qualify for the final. Grant Halsall (14), competed in heats of the 200m backstroke and 100m butterfly reaching his highest heat rankings of fourth (9th overall) in the backstroke, but in the face of strong South African and English performances, he did not advance to the final.
The Island's best result to date came from Ramseian Olivia Rawlinson in the 200m backstroke. Qualifying second in her heat, Olivia smashed her life time best in the evening final by nearly three seconds, posting a 2min 21.94 performance and a fifth place finish.
Tomorrow’s swimming and the final rounds of the Olympic Skeet will round off the Commonwealth Youth Games for 2008, with four Manx athletes in contention for qualification to finals.
