July 2009 marked the first official ‘passing of the torch’ between outgoing “Sports Gapper” Danielle Mottram and the newly appointed Matthew Wilkinson (right of picture). The role jointly funded by the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association (IOMCGA) and the Golden Jubilee Trust, was first created two years ago to create a position for a Manx Student to undertake a one year work experience placement within the IOMCGA.
Each individual who takes up the post is expected to be an enthusiastic and self motivating sportsperson residing on the Isle of Man. They must have the desire and commitment to organise events and co-ordinate wider activities which, as a result, require the existence of aspirant leadership qualities, an outgoing nature and a mature approach. The “Sports Gapper’s” role is to actively work in promoting the widest possible involvement of the Island’s Community to the forthcoming Delhi Commonwealth Games 2010 and subsequent events.
The latest appointee to the position is a 21 year old badminton player who, as an athlete, represented the Isle of Man in the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006. He has recently graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a degree in Sports Science with Coaching, exactly the same as Danni, and hopes experience as an athlete and the knowledge gained within his degree, will help him in the role.
“To be a part of the Commonwealth Games once more is a great honour and I am excited at the prospects and opportunities the year may hold, and proud that I can once again work alongside highly motivated individuals who wish to compete at the highest level for the Isle of Man. I realise I have a tough act to follow in Danni, as she has developed the role to a very high standard and brought a level of professionalism which each “Sports Gapper” in future years will no doubt strive to match. I will endeavour to match this standard, developing the projects initiated by Danni but also casting my own flavour on the role. The opportunities are great and varied for each “Sports Gapper” and they must utilise their own skills and interests to best serve the IOMCGA and get the most out of their placement.”
